Le Suisse Peter Stamm s'est imposé en cinq livres comme l'un des principaux auteurs contemporains de langue allemande. Une écriture blanche, minimaliste, une attention aiguë portée aux détails du quotidien, aux changements infimes, sont sa marque de fabrique. Cosmopolite, il a longuement séjourné à Paris, Berlin, New York et en Scandinavie. Il a étudié la philologie anglaise et la psychologie avant de travailler un temps en hôpital psychiatrique, puis dans la presse comme reporter, critique de cinéma et rédacteur en chef d'Entwürfe für Literatur. Ses deux premiers romans, Agnès (1998) et Paysages aléatoires (2003), se sont vendus chacun à plus de 50 000 exemplaires en Allemagne et en Suisse, où ils sont étudiés à l'école. Établi à Winterthur, Peter Stamm se consacre désormais pleinement à la littérature. Transfuge l'a rencontré à l'occasion de la sortie en France d'Un jour comme aujourd'hui, roman juste et troublant. Alors qu'il se croit atteint d'une grave maladie, Andreas, prof d'allemand de banlieue parisienne en proie à la crise de la quarantaine, décide d'abandonner son morne quotidien pour revenir en Suisse. Une quête de l'essentiel chère à l'écrivain, qui s'est choisi pour adage ces mots de Montaigne : « Tout entier et tout nu. »
