Enfant, Daniel Mendelsohn écoutait avec délectation les innombrables récits de son grand–père Abraham sur sa vie en Pologne, avant son émigration aux États–Unis. Ces histoires, riches en variations, étaient associées dans sa conscience à la maison d'Abraham, à la cuisine juive et à certaines conversations tenues en yiddish par les adultes, dans lesquelles il était question de Schmiel, le frère de son grandpère, assassiné par les nazis avec sa femme et ses quatre fi lles. Il n'avait pu tirer des membres de sa famille américaine que des bribes, rien de plus.
Il y a six ans, Daniel Mendelsohn, spécialiste de la culture hellénistique, a décidé de mener une enquête personnelle aux quatre coins de la planète pour tenter d'entrevoir la vérité sur la disparition de son grand–oncle Schmiel. Dans un récit à la première personne, entrecoupé de méditations sur deux épisodes bibliques, le Déluge et Sodome et Gomorrhe, l'écrivain raconte comment il a découvert peu à peu que sa famille avait été engloutie dans la Shoah, sans laisser d'autres traces que quelques lettres et rares photos.
