Dans une autre vie, Brian Evenson était prêtre Mormon. Mains excommunié à la suite de ses premières publications et contraint de rompre avec sa famille, il s'est depuis consacré pleinement à l'écriture et à la traduction. Et c'est une bonne nouvelle.
Inversion est un coup de poing lancé à la figure de l'Église mormone. Un pied de nez à la littérature trop policée. Inversion est un livre dérangeant, une parabole sur la dualité et la folie. Rudd, élevé dans la plus pure tradition mormone, est à peine sorti de l'enfance lorsqu'il découvre, au fond des affaires de son père mort, la preuve de l'existence de Lael, son demi–frère. Quelques années plus tard, l'adolescent tombe, dans le cadre d'une recherche pour le lycée, sur l'histoire de William Hopper Young, un mormon assassin d'une jeune femme un siècle plus tôt… Passé et présent se confondent, un meurtre en efface un autre. Et le délire gagne. Trois actes, trois tempos, pour une tragédie brillantissime. Entretien avec Brian Evenson, cet ancien prêtre mormon qui, contraint de choisir pour cause d'écrits « inappropriés » – mais salués par la critique et par ses pairs, George Saunders et Rick Moody en tête – entre sa religion, son travail, sa famille et la littérature, opta pour la dernière. Sans jamais regretter sa décision.
